Crisis Response Fund

The Crisis Response Fund will help children and families in Ethiopia access critical services like food relief, educational support, and the provision of hygiene supplies related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scroll down to read more about each need.

With a majority of its citizens already struggling with extreme poverty, the additional hardships of hyperinflation, civil war, a pandemic and an invasion of desert locusts have led to a socio-economic crisis in Ethiopia. As a result, the children and families of our Hope 4others projects are experiencing severe food insecurity, a lack of access to academic instruction, and potential exposure to COVID-19.

Your donation today will help us respond to this crisis and equip these families with the resources they need.

Give online below or mail a donation, payable to 4others, to 937 Minnesota Ave, San Jose, CA 95125.

BACKGROUND:

The COVID-19 pandemic and an invasion of desert locust have led to an acute food crisis and severe inflation in Ethiopia. Since the first case of COVID-19 was announced and the subsequent measures to prevent its spread were put in place, more than 75% of the labor force in the informal sector have lost jobs, including all those who make their living as daily laborers.

It's important to remember that Ethiopia has no social welfare system and the government has no capacity to subsidize businesses so that they can retain their workers and therefore minimize the social crises in the country. Consequently, more than 30 million people have been both directly and indirectly affected by the loss of jobs due to the spread of COVID-19.

According to a UN assessment in April 2020, the coming locust swarm, expected to be 20 times larger than the last, poses an "alarming and unprecedented threat" to food security and livelihoods in the region. The situation is made worse by the fact that farmers are unable to fully engage in essential tasks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Emergency food assistance is projected to be needed for the next 18 months to offset the negative impact of the desert locust.

Hygiene Supplies

Due to rising market prices, the families in the Hope 4others program cannot afford basic hygiene supplies and PPE items like gloves and face masks. 4others and SVO would like to provide these resources immediately so families can protect themselves against the spread of the virus.

One key method of COVID-19 prevention is the frequent and thorough washing of hands. To allow families to practice proper sanitation, we would like to provide two bars of soap for each family on a monthly basis. The provision of hand sanitizer will also allow family members to practice good hygiene whenever they leave their homes for necessary activities (i.e. collecting wood, fetching water, shopping, or visiting health centers).

$25 will provide SOAP and HAND SANITIZER for a family for 3 months.

We would also like to provide a one-time distribution of reusable face masks and a box of disposable gloves for every family. This would follow the Ethiopian government's recommendations and help family members minimize unsafe contact with those who could potentially have the virus.

$43 will provide reusable FACE MASKS for a family.

$16 will provide a box of disposable GLOVES for a family.

Educational Support

In Ethiopia, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all schools have been closed. The Ministry of Education has implemented a program to provide education through radio and television broadcasts. But most of the families in our Hope 4others program do not have a radio or television in their home.

Therefore, we would like to provide a small solar-powered radio to each of our 234 beneficiary children so that they can access the lessons delivered by the government. The radios will also allow each family to receive regular updates and training related to COVID-19 transmitted by the Ministry of Health.

Since the government has halted the distribution of any hard copies of lesson material, our tutorial staff will also provide recorded tutorial lessons and moral and ethical education via USB, which can be accessed using the radios. Every 14 days, children will receive an oral exam based on the tutorial lessons and new material will be loaded onto the USB.

$27 provides one RADIO and a USB drive for a child.
